Report: David Wagner in frame to replace Rafael Benitez

A report claims that David Wagner, who left Premier League basement boys Huddersfield Town last month, is under consideration for the Newcastle United job.

Newcastle United will reportedly consider appointing ex-Huddersfield Town manager David Wagner should Rafael Benitez decide against signing a new contract.

The Magpies are still hopeful of reaching an agreement with Benitez, who has four months left to run on his existing deal.

Owner Mike Ashley backed the popular Spaniard by breaking the club's long-standing transfer record on deadline day, bringing in Miguel Almiron from Atlanta United for £21m.

However, The Times reports that plans are already in place in case Benitez walks away in the summer, with Ashley not wanting to be caught cold.

Wagner, who left Huddersfield by mutual consent last month with the club sitting bottom of the Premier League, is said to be among the leading contenders to succeed Benitez.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers is also believed to be under consideration, four years after last managing in the Premier League, but United would have to negotiate with the Scottish champions.
