Newcastle United defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa believes that the Magpies are capable of challenging for the Premier League title in the future.

Newcastle United defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa believes that the Magpies could challenge for the Premier League title in the future.

The North-East side are currently struggling at the bottom half of the league table just two points away from relegation, but Yanga-Mbiwa, who signed a five-and-a-half-year deal this week, is aiming much higher.

"I think with the players we have got on board and the manager and his ideas, we can definitely close the gap, get in the top six and, in the long term, why not challenge for the title," BBC Sport quotes Yanga-Mbiwa as saying.

Meanwhile, the Magpies are close to finalising the captures of Ligue 1 duo Yoan Gouffran and Massadio Haidara.
