Tottenham Hotspur set out to become the first team to win three consecutive league games against Pep Guardiola in Thursday's clash with Manchester City.

Tottenham Hotspur will be out to make history against Pep Guardiola when they travel to the Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City in Thursday's Premier League clash.

The North London giants have experienced their fair share of success against the English champions in recent years, winning four of their last five Premier League games against them.

Spurs managed to do the double over Man City in the 2021-22 campaign, firstly securing a 1-0 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the first weekend of the season under Nuno Espirito Santo.

Son Heung-min's winner propelled Tottenham to victory in that August encounter, and Antonio Conte then oversaw a dramatic 3-2 success at the Etihad in February.

Harry Kane and Dejan Kulusevski struck either side of Riyad Mahrez's response, and City thought they had rescued a point through Riyad Mahrez's stoppage-time penalty before Kane won it for Spurs right at the death.

Should Tottenham manage to defy the odds and claim victory on Thursday night, they will become the first team to ever win three league games in a row against a Guardiola-led team.

Man City welcome Spurs to the Etihad having failed to win either of their last two league games on home soil, losing to Brentford before the World Cup break prior to a stalemate with Everton.

Tottenham can also boast an impressive nine goals in their last three Premier League away games, although not since December 2016 have Man City gone three home games without a win in the top flight.

Conte - who has three wins from five versus Guardiola as a manager - has been handed a major injury boost ahead of the trip to the Etihad, as Rodrigo Bentancur is available again following a groin problem.

The Uruguay international has been absent since sustaining a groin injury at the World Cup, and Tottenham have only claimed five points from their last 12 on offer in the Premier League without the 25-year-old.

That Bentancur-less run includes Sunday's dismal North London derby defeat to Arsenal, and Conte has admitted that his side will need a slice of good fortune to win at the Etihad again.

"I remember the game and to win against Manchester City, you have to try not to make mistakes. Because you know for sure, when you go to play against Manchester City, the ball possession will be 70 to 75% for them," Conte said at his pre-game press conference.

"Then you have 20 or 25 percent of ball possession so in this period you have to be very good, to move the ball well and create chances to score.

"You know when you're playing against I think the best team in the world at the moment it will be very difficult. Last season we were very good, showed great resilience. Also in this type of game, you need also to be a bit lucky to get a good result."

Spurs find themselves fifth in the Premier League table ahead of Thursday's clash, and the gap to fourth-placed Manchester United could stretch to eight points if the Red Devils overcome Crystal Palace on Wednesday night.
