David Moyes laments defending following late loss to Crystal Palace

Sunderland manager David Moyes criticises his side's defending following their injury-time loss at the hands of visiting Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

Sunderland boss David Moyes has lamented his side's defending after the Black Cats lost 3-2 to Crystal Palace in the Premier League this afternoon.

Moyes and his men had found themselves two goals to the good, but they fell prey to a remarkable Palace fightback as Christian Benteke struck late on to give the Eagles all three points on their travels.

"We couldn't defend well enough. We went 2-0 up, though perhaps not justly. But we didn't tighten up," said Moyes, according to BBC Sport.

"We didn't give ourselves a chance. We have to take responsibility throughout the side - why did we not stop Benteke's run? He got a jump on us and it's beyond me.

"This can't always be led by a manager - players have to take responsibility on the pitch. We needed to stand up and assume responsibility, but we weren't capable of doing that."

Sunderland are rooted to the bottom of the league standings, having failed to win any of their opening six matches.
