Preview: Swansea City vs. Portsmouth - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's Championship clash between Swansea City and Portsmouth, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Swansea City will look to build upon their successful midweek outing against Derby County when they welcome Portsmouth to South Wales for Saturday's Championship contest.

Meanwhile, Pompey are set to return to action for the first time since November 9 after seeing their last two league matches postponed.

Swansea are sitting in 11th position in the Championship table after winning six, drawing four and losing seven of their 17 matches this season.

The Swans kicked off the month of November with consecutive wins over Oxford United and Watford, before they fell to back-to-back defeats to Burnley and Leeds United, conceding the losing goal in stoppage time of both of those matches.

After suffering two dramatic defeats, Swansea showed great character to bounce back in Wednesday's away game against Derby, with Zan Vipotnik and Ronald scoring a goal apiece to seal a 2-1 victory at Pride Park.

Luke Williams's side will now return to the Swansea.com Stadium, where they have found wins hard to come by in recent times, having won just one of their previous five home matches (D2, L2).

The first goal could be crucial if Swansea are to pick up a positive result on Saturday because the Swans have lost all six league matches where they have conceded first this season.

Portsmouth have experienced a frustrating week following the international break, having seen their last two games against Blackburn Rovers and Millwall called off.

Their trip to Ewood Park was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, before Wednesday's home meeting with Millwall was eventually postponed around 55 minutes after the scheduled kickoff because of a power failure at Fratton Park.

Pompey may have two games in hand over their relegation rivals, but they will return to action as the Championship's basement side, with four points separating them from safety.

While they may have won just two league games this season, the most recent of those victories took place in Portsmouth's final outing before the international break, with Josh Murphy, Conor Ogilvie and Colby Bishop all finding the net in a 3-1 victory.

Portsmouth will hope to claim a second straight victory when they travel to the Swansea.com Stadium for the first time since they recorded a 2-1 victory in November 2010.

Team News

Swansea City's Ronald on November 27, 2024© Imago

Swansea are unable to call upon the services of Ollie Cooper and Andy Fisher, while Josh Ginnelly is still working his back from a long injury layoff.

Eom Ji-sung and Sam Parker are making progress in their respective recoveries, but it remains to be seen whether they will be ready for Saturday's home fixture.

Williams could be tempted to select the same lineup that started the win over Derby as long as there are no fresh injury concerns.

As for the visitors, they will be without the defensive trio of Jordan Williams, Ibane Bowat and Conor Shaughnessy due to their respective injury issues.

Forward Kusini Yengi will have to be assessed after he picked up a knee issue while he was away with the Australia national team.

Bishop was named in the lineup for Wednesday's game against Millwall before it was postponed, meaning it is likely that he will make his first start of the season at the Swansea.com Stadium on Saturday.

Swansea City possible starting lineup:
Vigrouroux; Naughton, Cabango, Darling, Tymon; Franco, Grimes; Ronald, Cullen, Peart-Harris; Vipotnik

Portsmouth possible starting lineup:
Schmid; Devlin, Poole, Pack, Ogilvie; Potts, Dozzell; Ritchie, Lang, Murphy; Bishop

We say: Swansea City 2-1 Portsmouth

Pompey will be raring to go following the recent postponement, but while they will be targeting a second straight win, we think that the relegation-threatened side may fall to a narrow defeat when they face a Swansea side that have won three of their last five matches.
