Ryan Jarvis has been diagnosed with a punctured lung following a challenge in Torquay United's game against Northampton on Saturday.
The 26-year-old also sustained fractured ribs in the collision five minutes from the final whistle.
It is expected that the striker will miss up to two months while he recovers.
Despite the injuries, Jarvis played until the end of the game but left the ground in an ambulance.
Jarvis has scored five goals for the League Two side this season.
