Sam Allardyce: 'Europa League spot would be an honour for West Ham United'

West Ham United manager Sam Allardyce admits that it would be "an honour for the club" if they were to qualify for the Europa League through the Fair Play rankings.

West Ham United manager Sam Allardyce has claimed that it would be "an honour for the club" if they were to qualify for the Europa League.

England were handed an extra place for next season's Europa League competition on Friday based on Fair Play rankings.

Liverpool are on top of this table but they are on course to qualify for the competition through their league position, so as things stand, West Ham would qualify for Europe as they are second in the rankings.

Allardyce told BBC Sport: "We've known for a few weeks. We've been planning the two scenarios. We'll know by the end of the season if we've clinched that place. If we do, it'll be an honour for the club."

West Ham last competed in a European competition back in the 2006-07 season, losing 4-0 on aggregate to Palermo in the first round of what was then known as the UEFA Cup.
