West Ham United have reportedly opened talks to sign Rennes defender Nayef Aguerd, with the centre-back position a top priority for the Hammers.
The 25-year-old is a versatile defender who can operate in the middle of a back line or slot in at left-back, and has demonstrated his attacking threat also.
During his debut campaign with Rennes last season, Aguerd netted three times in 35 Ligue 1 appearances, attracting interest from David Moyes's side.
Football Insider reports that negotiations have begun over what it would take to lure the Morocco international to East London on a permanent deal.
West Ham are keen to strengthen their squad for next season, as they are about to embark on a European journey, and finding cover and competition for senior members Issa Diop, Angelo Ogbonna and Craig Dawson is said to be a top priority.
Aguerd still has three years left to run on his contract at Rennes, after joining the club last summer from Dijon for around £3.6m.
