Andy Carroll targets World Cup spot

West Ham striker Andy Carroll reveals that he remains optimistic over securing a place in England's World Cup squad this summer.

West Ham United striker Andy Carroll has admitted that he remains optimistic over securing a place in England's World Cup squad this summer.

The 25-year-old has endured an injury-hit first season with the Hammers, having only returned to first-team duties in January following a four-month absence.

However, the former Liverpool forward bagged his first Premier League goal of the campaign in the 3-1 defeat to Stoke City on Saturday, and Carroll says a place in Roy Hodgson's Three Lions set-up is now on his mind.

"Of course it is, yes," he told Sky Sports News.

"Obviously I am thinking about that but I have to keep scoring goals for West Ham and we have to start winning games again before that comes."

Carroll, who has won nine caps for England, has been absent from the international scene since 2012.
