Xabi Alonso pleased to escape Jamie Carragher's All-Star charity squad

Xabi Alonso jokes that he prefers to be in Steven Gerrard's All-Star team because he thinks that Jamie Carragher would be a "terrible" manager.

Xabi Alonso has admitted that he is relieved to have escaped Jamie Carragher's All-Star charity squad because he believes that the former defender would be a "terrible" manager.

The midfielder, who currently plays for Bayern Munich, was picked to be part of Steven Gerrard's team in this Sunday's one-off game at Anfield.

Alonso spent five years on Merseyside, where he won the Champions League and FA Cup before moving on to Real Madrid.

"I'm glad I'm in Stevie's team because I'm pretty sure Carra will be a terrible manager!" Alonso told Liverpool's official website. "So I'd rather be in Stevie's team and it's going to be a great game and we are going to have great fun.

"It's going to be good to see friends who we have been apart from for a few years, so it's going to be really nice going back to the stadium."

Former Liverpool stars Luis Suarez and Fernando Torres will also take part in the game.
