A Manchester United fan has committed suicide after learning that his side succumbed to defeat against Newcastle United.

The Premier League champions have fallen 13 points behind leaders Arsenal in the table following a 1-0 loss to the Magpies at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Police in Nairobi have revealed that following the result, John Macharia jumped to his death from the seventh floor of a building after telling friends that he could not handle watching United lose twice in a row.

"All witness accounts suggest he committed suicide because the team lost, but officers are still talking to those who were with him as part of the investigations into the incident," Nairobi County police chief Benson Kibue told Standard Online.

The United fan was just 23 years old.
