Roy Keane calls police to Republic of Ireland team hotel

The Football Association of Ireland confirm that Roy Keane called police to Republic of Ireland's team hotel following "an incident" yesterday afternoon.

Republic of Ireland assistant manager Roy Keane has allegedly been caught up in an altercation with a member of the public which led to police being called to the team's hotel.

An ambulance also attended the scene, with some reports suggesting that Keane was forced to fend off an autograph-hunting fan at the Portmarnock Hotel, near Dublin.

However, the Football Association of Ireland released a statement which backed the former Manchester United midfielder, while also dismissing "inaccurate media reports".

"We wish to clarify that Roy Keane called the Gardai following the incident," the FAI statement read. "The manager, Martin O'Neill, and the FAI are fully aware of the circumstances surrounding this event, and the assistant manager has their full support."

A police spokesman confirmed: "Gardai are investigating an incident which occurred at a hotel in Portmarnock in the late afternoon."

It was also confirmed that no arrests had been made and no complaints received.

Ireland take on Scotland in a Euro 2016 qualifier at Celtic Park tomorrow night.
