Jockey Jamie Spencer in retirement U-turn

Jamie Spencer abandons plans to retire as a jockey and announces that he will ride freelance next year.

Jamie Spencer has scratched plans to retire as a jockey and has announced that he will be riding as a freelance next season.

The 34-year-old revealed back in August that he planned to retire as a rider and take up a management role with Sheikh Fahad Al Thani's Qatar Racing.

However, after what was expected to be his final race at the Hong Kong Mile, Spencer said that he had turned the role down.

"Sheikh Fahad and Qatar Racing offered me a wonderful opportunity to become part of their management team but, after much reflection, I have decided that at this stage in my life I am not going to accept it," Spencer said in a statement.

"I have discussed at length with Sheikh Fahad my decision to carry on riding and he fully understands and supports me. He appreciates that riding is what makes me happy and the last thing he wants to do is stand in the way of that."

Spencer is a two-time champion jockey in Britain.
