China's Zhang Hong wins her country's first ever Olympic gold medal in speed skating after coming first in the women's 1,000m event.

China's Zhang Hong has won her country's first ever Olympic gold medal in speed skating after coming first in the women's 1,000m event.

The 25-year-old from Heilongjiang jumped for joy with her teammates after realising that none of the other racers was able to beat her time of 1:14.02.

The podium was completed by Irene Wust and Margot Boer of the Netherlands, who secured times of 1:14.69 and 1:14.90 respectively.

Earlier on, Zhang's compatriot Li Janrou won gold in the 500m short track event.
