Wrexham's promotion charge continues on Tuesday when they welcome Stevenage to the Racecourse Ground in their 28th League One game of the season.

The Welsh hosts managed to hold league leaders Birmingham City to a 1-1 stalemate last Thursday and are third with 52 points, whereas Stevenage are 15th with 34 points beat Barnsley 1-0 on Saturday.

Wrexham were arguably unfortunate to not claim all three points against Birmingham given they limited their opponents to just one big chance and 0.26 xG while creating two big chances and 1.22 xG.

The Red Dragons occupy the first promotion playoff spot and are three points from second-placed Wycombe Wanderers, who they are set to play later in March in what could be a pivotal clash in the race for automatic promotion.

Head coach Phil Parkinson's side have scored 39 goals and conceded on 21 occasions in League One this season, and these records make them the division's joint seventh-best offensive and second-best defensive club.

Though Parkinson's team have been defeated in two of their last four matches, they were unbeaten in their prior nine, winning seven and drawing two.

Wrexham are also undefeated at home this term, winning 15 and being held to a stalemate three times in their 18 outings at the Racecourse Ground in 2024-25.

As for the visitors, they were deserving winners against Barnsley, with the victors limiting their opponents to just 0.09 xG while creating four big chances of their own.

Though Stevenage are nine places and eight points from sixth-placed Barnsley, who occupy the final promotion playoff spot, they do have two games in hand and could feasibly make a push for the top six in the second half of the campaign.

Boss Alex Revell will hope to his team can repeat their performance in their previous clash against Wrexham on October 1 when they triumphed 1-0, a game in which the Welsh side were prevented from creating any big chances and produced just one shot on target.

Revell's side have won their last two matches, but they did draw three, lose two and win just one of their previous six games in all competitions.

Stevenage's displays on the road have been strong from a defensive perspective considering they are unbeaten in their six most recent away outings – drawing three and winning three – keeping six clean sheets in that time, though they have only scored twice in their past five away games.

Team News

Wrexham's Ollie Palmer applauds fans after his side's match against Mansfield Town, November 9, 2024© Imago

Wrexham may start most of the XI that featured against Birmingham last time out, with centre-backs Max Cleworth, Dan Scarr and Thomas O'Connor almost certain to appear in defence.

Defensive midfielder Matty James could be joined in a midfield three by George Dobson and Oliver Rathbone, who scored the hosts' goal against Birmingham.

Ollie Palmer could be paired up front with striker Paul Mullin, who came on from the substitutes' bench last Thursday.

Meanwhile, attacking midfielder Daniel Kemp scored the winning goal against Barnsley for Stevenage, and he may be joined in attack on Tuesday by Jordan Roberts, Jake Young and Jamie Reid.

Daniel Phillips was partnered in a double pivot on Saturday by Harvey White, and the pair can be expected to retain their places in the XI.

Centre-back Charlie Goode is likely to trusted to protect goalkeeper Murphy Mahoney alongside fellow centre-back Carl Piergianni.

Wrexham possible starting lineup:
Okonkwo; Cleworth, Scarr, O'Connor; Barnett, Dobson, James, Rathbone, McClean; Lee; Palmer

Stevenage possible starting lineup:
Mahoney; James-Wildin, Goode, Piergianni, Freestone; Phillips, White; Roberts, Kemp, Young; Reid

We say: Wrexham 1-0 Stevenage

Considering that Stevenage have been in fine form at the back, it would not be surprising if Tuesday's match was low scoring.

Wrexham should be seen as clear favourites given their phenomenal home record, but they will almost certainly have their work cut out to break down the visitors' defence.
