Arsene Wenger: 'We can't afford to lose Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to injury'

Arsene Wenger says that Arsenal "cannot afford to lose" Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to injury after he suffered the recurrence of a groin problem at the weekend.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has insisted that he "cannot afford" to lose Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as the club awaits the outcome of a recurring groin injury for the midfielder.

The 21-year-old suffered the problem during the Gunners' 4-1 win over Newcastle United on Saturday evening.

Should the England international face a spell on the sidelines, he will join teammates Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey and Mikel Arteta on the treatment table.

"He got a knock," The Mirror quotes Wenger as saying. "He's got a pain in his groin. I took him off quickly. I wanted to take him off, and then he takes the ball and crosses the whole pitch and he cannot run anymore.

"We cannot afford to lose him at the moment. I hope it's nothing bad. He had a little bit of inflammation before the game. I took him to Galatasaray and maybe two games [in five days] was a lot for him."

Arsenal will travel to Anfield to face Liverpool on Sunday.
