Arsenal 'line up Mikel Arteta as future boss'

Arsenal reportedly identify the club's former midfielder Mikel Arteta as a potential future manager of the Gunners.

Arsenal have reportedly identified Mikel Arteta as a potential future manager of the Gunners.

Arteta spent five years at Arsenal as a player - making 149 appearances for the London club before retiring from professional football at the end of the 2015-16 campaign.

The 35-year-old is currently assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, having reportedly turned down the chance to join the coaching staff at Arsenal.

According to The Telegraph, that has not impacted on Arteta's standing at Arsenal, and the London club believe that the former Spain international has the potential to one day manage the Gunners.

Current Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is contracted to the club until the end of next season, and another of his former players Giovanni van Bronckhorst has also been linked with the managerial role at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal will look to book their spot in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup when they host West Ham United on Tuesday night.
