Arsenal have reportedly shown an interest in signing Calgiari Calcio midfielder Nicolo Barella during the January transfer window.
Barella is regarded as one of the top prospects in Serie A, with the 21-year-old having already earned four caps in the senior ranks with Italy.
Chelsea are known to be attempting to push through a deal for the player before the end of the month, but according to Sky Italia journalist Ghilda Pensante, the Gunners are looking to edge out their Premier League rivals.
Pensante said: "At present the most likely option for him is to stay with Cagliari until the end of the season, but the closest club to Barella in Serie A is Napoli, who could only close the deal for him in January if Allan leaves them."
"[Maurizio] Sarri at Chelsea really likes the player, but the Premier League club we know has been showing more interest in him is Arsenal."
Arsenal are likely to prioritise a new centre-back and creative player over Barella due to the funds available in January.
