Former Arsenal striker John Hartson has called on the club to sign Real Madrid's Sami Khedira during the January transfer window.
The Gunners have long been linked with the Germany international, who is seen as the type of holding midfielder that they desperately need.
While admitting that the 27-year-old would not come cheap, Hartson is eager for the club to add some mettle to central areas as soon as they can.
"A defensive midfield player should offer protection. I like Mikel Arteta but he doesn't have the presence, while Abou Diaby can't string matches together," he told Goal.com. "I see Calum Chambers eventually playing there but the summer buy from Southampton is needed elsewhere just now.
"Real Madrid's Sami Khedira has been linked and, although it would cost them £40m to get his signature, Arsenal have the money and can't afford not to spend it. If they can't get him, Javi Martinez at Bayern Munich would fit the bill."
Khedira's current deal at Real Madrid is due to expire at the end of the season.
