France attacker Antoine Griezmann extends his contract with Spanish giants Atletico Madrid until the summer of 2022.

Antoine Griezmann has extended his contract with Atletico Madrid until the summer of 2022.

The France attacker was strongly linked with a move to Manchester United in the latter stages of last month, with the Red Devils reportedly confident of signing the 26-year-old for £87m.

Talk of a move to Old Trafford was thrown into doubt, however, when it was confirmed that Atletico had failed to overturn their transfer ban, meaning that they would be unable to sign any new players this summer.

Griezmann then posted a tweet saying 'Now more than ever' as he appeared to confirm his stay at Atletico earlier this month, and the attacker has now signed a new contract with the Madrid giants.

"The first thing that I want to do is apologise to the people who misunderstood my statements," Griezmann told Atletico's official website.

"Maybe I expressed myself badly or someone wanted to make news where there weren't any, but since I came, I have given my all for my club, my teammates and my coaching staff, and I'm very happy to live one more season with all of you."

Griezmann's release clause of £87m will remain the same, although it is understood that the fresh terms have made him the highest-paid player in the club's history.
