Long-serving Barcelona defender Gerard Pique puts pen to paper on a new four-and-a-half-year deal, which has a release clause of £440m inserted.

Barcelona have revealed that defender Gerard Pique has signed a contract extension at Camp Nou to keep him in place until 2022.

The Spain international has featured 422 times for the Catalan giants since returning in 2008, winning six La Liga titles and three Champions Leagues in that time.

As part of his new deal, which will keep the 30-year-old at Barca for the remainder of the season and the next four years, a £440m buyout clause has been inserted.

Pique departed the club in 2004 after seven years in their academy setup, moving to Manchester United and making 23 appearances for the English club.

A total of 25 trophies have been won by the Spanish centre-back since being brought back to Catalonia a decade ago.
