Chesterfield chief executive Chris Turner has revealed that the club are interested in signing Southend United defender Ryan Cresswell.
The 25-year-old, who is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the lower leagues, has been linked with a host of clubs in recent months.
"He is a player we have been targeting this summer and Paul Cook has spoken to Phil Brown on numerous occasions this summer," Turner told BBC Sport.
"Fleetwood have made a couple of offers for him which have been turned down and I can understand why Southend don't want to let him go because he was one of the best centre-halves in League Two last season.
"They want to keep him but the boy has intimated that he wants to move back home."
Cresswell joined Southend from Rotherham United in 2012.
