Roberto Martinez: 'John Stones close to return'

Everton manager Roberto Martinez reveals that defender John Stones is ahead of schedule as he continues to recover from an ankle injury.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has hinted that he won't rush the return of John Stones, despite the defender attending training ahead of schedule.

The England international suffered ankle ligament damage at Manchester United at the start of October, which looked to have ruled the 20-year-old out until the New Year.

After taking part in training, Stones looks on course to feature over Christmas but Martinez hasn't revealed whether he would feature against Queens Park Rangers on Monday night.

The 41-year-old told reporters: "John Stones is ahead of schedule. He's a quick healer and has trained once with the squad already.

"He is desperate to get back on a football pitch. From January to the end of the season, he can step up his level again."

Stones has made a total of 33 appearances for Everton since his introduction to the first team.
