Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann signs a new contract until 2026, ending Bayern Munich and Liverpool's hopes of securing his services this summer.

Germany have announced that head coach Julian Nagelsmann has signed a new contract until 2026, ending Bayern Munich and Liverpool's hopes of securing his services this summer.

The 36-year-old replaced Hansi Flick in September 2023, six months after being sacked by Bayern.

Nagelsmann initially signed a short-term deal as Germany boss that was due to expire after this summer's European Championships.

Die Mannachaft have won three games out of six since Nagelsmann took charge, including their last two friendlies against France and the Netherlands, but there were suggestions that he could make a swift return to club management amid reported interest from both Bayern and Liverpool.

However, the German football association (DFB) have now confirmed that Nagelsmann has committed his future to the national team by penning a contract extension until the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup.

Nagelsmann's new deal comes just over a week after Rudi Voller extended his contract to remain as director of the Germany men's national team until 2026.

"I made this decision with my heart. It's a great honour to be able to coach the national team and work with the best players in the country," Nagelsmann told the DFB's official website after signing his extension.

"With successful, passionate performances, we have the chance to inspire an entire nation. We got a taste of that in the two wins against France and the Netherlands in March, where the enthusiasm of the fans really touched me.

"We want to have a successful European Championship together on home turf, and we're all itching to get going. After that, I'm looking forward to taking on the challenge of a World Cup alongside my coaching team."

Bernd Neuendorf, president of the DFB, added: "It is a strong signal for the DFB and the national team that Julian Nagelsmann will remain national coach beyond the home European Championship, because he is on the wish list of many big clubs across Europe.

"Now there is planning security and everyone can concentrate entirely on a successful performance at the European Championship."

What does this mean for Bayern and Liverpool?

Nagelsmann's decision to remain a national team coach means both Bayern and Liverpool must look elsewhere in their search for a new manager.

While Bayern will part ways with Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season, Jurgen Klopp will step down as Liverpool boss this summer after eight-and-a-half memorable years at Anfield.

Recent reports suggested that Nagelsmann had emerged as a leading target for Bayern, but they could now turn their attention to Brighton & Hove Albion boss Roberto De Zerbi, who is another name said to be on their radar.

De Zerbi has also been linked with Liverpool, although their interest in the Italian is believed to have cooled in recent weeks as they have identified Sporting Lisbon's Ruben Amorim as one of their primary targets.

However, Amorim has strongly denied rumours that he has ever held talks or agreed any deal to take charge of the Merseysiders this summer.
