Steven Gerrard admits to losing "buzz" during bit-part Liverpool role

Steven Gerrard admits that he lost the "buzz" that he usually thrives on when his role became restricted at Liverpool.

Steven Gerrard has admitted that he lost the "buzz" that he usually thrives on when he was told by manager Brendan Rodgers that his role in the Liverpool team would be restricted.

The 34-year-old quit international duty with England last summer in order to focus on his club football, but earlier this season, the midfielder opted to call an end to his 17-year senior career at Anfield.

Gerrard, who joined Liverpool when he was eight years old, later revealed that he rejected a new deal after learning that he will not be a regular in the starting XI.

During a Liverpool gala dinner on Tuesday night, Gerrard said: "I think the signs this year were that I'm going to become a squad player, play less.

"I'm going to come on as a sub and the buzz changes. It's not a selfish thing - coming on as a sub is just not the same buzz, so things have changed this year."

Gerrard, who will play his final home game at Anfield on Saturday, will join MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy on an 18-month deal in July.
