Steven Gerrard apologises for red card against Manchester United

Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard apologises for his 48-second dismissal in his side's 2-1 defeat at home to Manchester United.

Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard has apologised for his dismissal in his side's 2-1 defeat at home to Manchester United on Sunday, admitting that he has let his teammates and fans down.

The talismanic 34-year-old came on as a half-time substitute at Anfield in place of Adam Lallana, but was sensationally shown a red card after just 48 seconds following a stamp on Ander Herrera's shin.

Gerrard told Sky Sports News after the game: "I need to accept it, the decision was right. I've let down my teammates and the supporters.

"I take full responsibility. I've been in the game long enough when you do something like that. I take full responsibility.

"I don't know what caused it. I don't know. Probably just a reaction to the initial tackle. I shouldn't say more about it really, I've just come out here to apologise to the dressing room and supporters."

The game will likely be Gerrard's last ever appearance against United ahead of his summer move to Los Angeles Galaxy.
