Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has revealed that he was given permission by teammate Luis Suarez to take a goal-bound free kick against Sunderland on Wednesday night.
The England international opened the scoring against the Black Cats at Anfield from a set piece, despite Suarez usually being at the top of the list.
"I don't usually get a go at them," Gerrard told the Liverpool Echo. "Suarez has been magnificent on set pieces but sometimes you need people to step in and I got that one.
"Suarez let me take one! He wouldn't let me take one at Cardiff, but it doesn't matter who gets the goals."
Despite a nerve-wracking final 10 minutes at Anfield, the Reds have kept up their Premier League title charge by holding on to a 2-1 victory.
