Liverpool drop Mamadou Sakho over doping claims

Liverpool make Mamadou Sakho 'unavailable for selection' following an investigation into an alleged anti-doping violation.

Liverpool have confirmed that defender Mamadou Sakho "will not be available for selection" during a UEFA investigation into an alleged anti-doping violation.

In a statement issued on their official website, Liverpool said that the club had received "a formal communication" from the governing body on Friday stating that an investigation is underway into a possible violation by the 26-year-old.

It added: "The player is currently not subject to any playing suspension. However, the club, in consultation with the player, has decided that while this process is followed the player will not be available for selection for matches. There will be no further comment at this time."

According to the Liverpool Echo, the France international had tested positive for a "fat burner" substance, which is used to lose weight, and now has until Tuesday to decide whether to accept the charge or ask for a second sample to be taken.

Sakho has reportedly informed the Reds that he was unaware of the supplement's composition and "acted in good faith" with its use.

The news means that Sakho will not be part of the matchday squad to face Newcastle United at Anfield this afternoon and could miss out on the upcoming Europa League semi-final legs with Villarreal.
