Steven Gerrard has reportedly turned down the chance of managing MK Dons in the hope of returning to Liverpool in a coaching capacity.
The 36-year-old is understood to have held talks with the League One side last week over succeeding Karl Robinson on a three-year deal.
However, Gerrard - who is seeking a new challenge in the game after calling time on his 18-month stint at Los Angeles Galaxy earlier this month - is said to want a combined position with both Liverpool and the England senior side.
Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has admitted in the past that he would be open to welcoming back the club legend, and The Mirror claims that the Merseyside outfit are prepared to hold informal discussions over a potential return.
It is suggested that any contract offer for Gerrard may not arrive until early in the New Year, however, as Klopp is focused on events on the field at the moment following an impressive start to his first full campaign in the Premier League.
Gerrard, who departed Anfield last year as the Reds' third-most capped player ever, is also thought to have received numerous offers to extend his playing career.
