Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has revealed that there is a chance that Roberto Martinez could reject an offer from Liverpool to become the club's new manager.
The Spaniard held talks with the Reds' American owners, including John W Henry, in Miami yesterday.
Despite the Wigan boss's willingness to be interviewed by the Merseyside outfit, Whelan believes that Martinez could turn down the job if he discovers that he will not be given full control of the players.
"A little bit will have to do with the attitude of the owners because I don't think they fully understand the game of football in England," said Whelan.
"Roberto likes total control, from the youngsters at 16 to the first team. If he doesn't get that I don't think he will take the job.
"My information is that the new Liverpool manager will not be given full responsibility of the football department. The set-up on the football side goes well beyond the norm even with a director of football."
Whelan has also claimed that he expects the 38-year-old to make a decision on his future by the weekend.
