Paris Saint-Germain's Angel di Maria: 'I left Manchester United to win trophies'

Angel di Maria says that he left Manchester United to join Paris Saint-Germain in order to win trophies.

Paris Saint-Germain star Angel di Maria has claimed that he left Manchester United last year in order to win trophies.

The Argentina international spent just one season at Old Trafford after joining from Real Madrid for a reported £59.7m fee in the summer of 2014.

The 28-year-old played in several different positions under manager Louis van Gaal, and struggled for consistency before he was sold to PSG for around £44m.

"It's not nice to say certain things but it's more that they didn't let me settle properly than I couldn't settle," Di Maria told BBC Sport.

"I left and the team are still playing the same way. Out of the European competitions, far from being champions of the Premier League.

"I don't think it was my fault or the fault of my teammates. Every time I was given the opportunity, I did all I could but it didn't work out as I hoped. So I decided to leave, not only to be happy but to win things."

Di Maria will face United's local rivals Manchester City in the Champions League quarter-finals.
