Manchester United's men's and women's squads will reportedly be asked for their opinions on Mason Greenwood potentially returning to the club.

Manchester United's men's and women's squads will reportedly be asked for their opinions on Mason Greenwood potentially returning to the club before a decision is made on his future.

The 21-year-old was suspended by the Red Devils last year following allegations posted online by a woman, which led to his arrest on suspicion of rape and assault.

Greenwood was then further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and making threats to kill before being released on bail, and he has not played for the Red Devils since.

Greenwood was subsequently charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and he was due to go on trial in November.

However, the Crown Prosecution Service announced last month that all charges against the forward had been dropped and the case discontinued due to the withdrawal of "key witnesses" and "new material" coming to light.

Greenwood has remained suspended by Man United while they continue their internal investigation, part of which will be to gauge the players' opinion on his return, according to ESPN.

The report states that the club will speak with the leadership groups in the men's and women's squads, although there is no shared viewpoint on the situation just yet.

However, both sets of players are said to have their reservations about welcoming Greenwood back to Old Trafford, while sponsors are also concerned about the prospect of the Englishman playing for the club again.

A decision on Greenwood's future is unlikely to be made until the summer, though, as men's first-team manager Erik ten Hag wants his squad free of distractions for the second half of the campaign.

Prior to his arrest and suspension, Greenwood had registered 35 goals and 12 assists in 129 games for Man United, while also earning one cap for the senior England team.

The 21-year-old is contracted to Man United until the end of the 2024-25 season, but a separate report from The Athletic has claimed that the women's squad do not want to see Greenwood back at the club.

Nevertheless, Ten Hag has supposedly spoken with Greenwood over the phone after the charges against him were dropped, but the forward could have options abroad if he is not taken back by Man United.

It has been claimed that Turkish giants Fenerbahce would be interested in signing the striker, who could also potentially continue his playing career in the Chinese Super League.

Man United sit third in the Premier League table and are next in action away to Barcelona in the first leg of their Europa League knockout round playoff tie on Thursday.
