Former Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic announces retirement at 34

Former Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic announces his retirement.

Former Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic has announced his retirement from football at the age of 34.

The Serbian centre-back, who left Inter Milan earlier this month, said in a statement on United's website that injuries had "taken their toll".

"The time has come for me to hang up my boots," Vidic said. "The injuries I have had in the last few years have taken their toll.

"I would like to thank all the players I have played with, all the managers and staff I have worked with, and say a big thank you to the fans for their support over the years."

Vidic calls time on his career 10 years after joining United from Spartak Moscow. He would go on to form a dominant centre-back partnership with Rio Ferdinand and became captain of the Red Devils in 2010.

In total, Vidic made 298 appearances for United before leaving for Inter Milan in 2014. He won five Premier League titles, one Champions League and three League Cups during his time with the Red Devils.
