Portland Timbers owner Merritt Paulson backs Wayne Rooney to make MLS switch

Portland Timbers owner Merritt Paulson says that Wayne Rooney would be a "great signing" for MLS.

Portland Timbers owner Merritt Paulson has claimed that Wayne Rooney would be a "great signing" for MLS.

The Manchester United captain has played for the Red Devils for the last 12 years, but now that he is in his thirties, there have been questions over his long-term future.

Rooney currently has three years remaining on a contract that he signed at Old Trafford in February 2014, but Paulson believes that the striker would fit into the American league.

"I would argue he still has some good soccer ahead of him," Paulson told The Mirror. "I think he would be a great signing for MLS - 100% MLS would be attractive for him.

"Keeping in mind that is a very talented footballer, who has quality soccer ahead of him, you are not talking about a 34 or 35-year-old."

Meanwhile, England manager Sam Allardyce has refused to confirm whether or not Rooney will be captain for upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
