Barcelona 'were never interested in Bruno Fernandes'

Barcelona sporting director Eric Abidal says that the Catalan giants were never interested in signing Bruno Fernandes during the January window.

Barcelona sporting director Eric Abidal has dismissed speculation linking the club with a move for Bruno Fernandes.

During the closing days of the January transfer window, it was suggested that the Catalan giants were eyeing up a deal for Fernandes, then of Sporting Lisbon.

The Portugal international ultimately signed for Manchester United, penning a five-and-a-half-year contract with the Premier League side.

Despite the claims that Barcelona held an interest in the playmaker, Abidal insists that the La Liga champions were not in the market for a creative midfielder.

The Frenchman told Sport: "He is an interesting player, but the agents try to do their job. We did not have that need. They sell you the product, but we were not interested in anything."

The initial report regarding Fernandes suggested that Barcelona would loan him to Valencia in order to help their efforts to sign Rodrigo.
