Sir Alex Ferguson is reportedly hopeful of landing Everton defender Leighton Baines for a modest price of £5m.

Everton's Leighton Baines has reportedly been identified by Sir Alex Ferguson as the man he wants to replace Patrice Evra as Manchester United's long-term left-back.

The 27-year-old joined the Toffees for an initial fee of £5m in 2007 and has been one of David Moyes's most consistent performers ever since, earning six England caps.

Ferguson has hinted that Fabio Da Silva will spend next season out on loan and, with Evra turning 31 next month, the Scot is said to be keen to bring in Baines this summer to provide competition for the Frenchman with a view to becoming his permanent successor.

According to The Mirror, the Red Devils boss is hopeful that a £5m bid will be enough to persuade the Merseyside club to sell.

Baines made his 160th Premier League appearance for Everton, in the 2-2 draw with Norwich City earlier this month.
