Manchester United's owners doubled the club's transfer budget in the aftermath of the 4-0 loss at Brentford, according to a report.

Manchester United's owners reportedly doubled the club's transfer budget in the aftermath of the 4-0 loss at Brentford in the middle of August.

The Red Devils made a disastrous start to the 2022-23 Premier League campaign, suffering a 2-1 defeat at home to Brighton & Hove Albion on August 7 before conceding four at Brentford in their next match.

At that stage, Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez were the club's only signings, but deals for Casemiro, Antony and Martin Dubravka have since been secured.

According to The Athletic, the club's initial transfer budget for this summer was £120m, but the figure was almost doubled due to the poor start to the season.

The report claims that senior players at Old Trafford convinced the club's hierarchy that more additions were required in order to make the team competitive once again.

The Glazer family allowed the club to bring in Casemiro from Real Madrid for £60m and Antony from Ajax for £85.5m, while Dubravka also made the switch to Old Trafford on loan from Newcastle United.

Man United have now won their last three Premier League matches against Liverpool, Southampton and Leicester City to move up into fifth position in the table.

Malacia, Martinez and Eriksen have played key roles in the recent wins, while Casemiro has featured off the bench against Southampton and Leicester City.

Antony is pushing to be in the squad for Sunday's clash with Arsenal, while there could also be a spot for Dubravka, who has been signed as a number two to support David de Gea.

The Red Devils have a busy run of games before the September international break, taking on Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Leeds United in the Premier League, in addition to Real Sociedad and Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League.

Man United were also believed to be considering signing a new right-back before the deadline, but Aaron Wan-Bissaka ultimately remained at the club despite a host of speculation.

There were also suggestions that the Red Devils wanted to bring in another centre-forward, but Cristiano Ronaldo stayed despite being strongly linked with an exit.

Ronaldo impressed off the bench in Thursday's 1-0 win over Leicester and is now pushing to be involved from the start against Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

Anthony Martial will again be unavailable for selection due to an Achilles problem, though, with Ten Hag admitting that he was unsure when the Frenchman would be able to return.

Luke Shaw and Wan-Bissaka also remain injury doubts for the visit of the table-topping Gunners.
