Edwin van der Sar coy on Petr Cech, Hugo Lloris suitability

Edwin van der Sar talks to Sports Mole about the goalkeeping situation at Manchester United, but refuses to favour either Petr Cech or Hugo Lloris.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar refused to be drawn on whether Petr Cech or Hugo Lloris would be better suited for the club.

It appears that the Red Devils will need to sign a new goalkeeper this summer as David de Gea appears on course to return to his native Spain with Real Madrid.

Chelsea's Cech and Tottenham Hotspur's Lloris have both been strongly linked with switches to Old Trafford, but when asked by Sports Mole this afternoon which of those two would be his preferred option for United, Van der Sar was non-committal.

"One is better suited than the other, but I'm not going to name names," replied the 44-year-old Dutchman, who made 266 appearances during his six-year stint at United.

With regards to replacing De Gea, Van der Sar admitted that it was "important" that the chosen goalkeeper had experience of winning trophies. He signed for United from Fulham, but he had previously won four Dutch titles with Ajax and the Champions League, as well as having kept goal for Juventus in Italy.

"[Experience is] not vital, but it helps. When I came [to United], I arrived from a smaller club in Fulham, but I had experience in Serie A with Juventus, I had won Dutch titles in the Eredivisie and I'd played plenty of times for the national team. That sort of experience is important," he added.

"It depends what the coach needs and what goalkeeper he wants for his team, not the type of trophies that he has won. You can be a great goalkeeper in a certain way, but if the coach likes a different way, it won't work. Sometimes you have attack-minded goalkeepers and then other times they like to protect their six-yard box."

Earlier today, a report suggested that Ajax number one Jasper Cillessen was also on manager Louis van Gaal's shortlist should De Gea move on.
