Louis van Gaal: 'David de Gea offered a lot of money to stay'

Louis van Gaal reveals that Manchester United have offered David de Gea "a lot of money" to try to persuade him to ignore Real Madrid's interest and stay at Old Trafford.

Louis van Gaal has revealed that Manchester United have offered David de Gea "a lot of money" to try to persuade him to stay at the club.

The goalkeeper, who is among the nominees for the PFA Player of the Year award after an impressive season, has been repeatedly linked with Real Madrid.

His current contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of next season and Van Gaal has confirmed that a lucrative new deal is on the table.

However, the Dutchman has conceded that only 24-year-old De Gea can decide his future.

Asked how negotiations were progressing, Van Gaal told reporters: "It can always happen. I am not the boss. I want him to stay. The player is the boss - he can say 'yes' or 'no'.

"You will have to ask David de Gea [if he is staying], not me. He has to sign. We have offered him a lot of money."

Reports earlier this week claimed that Madrid have dropped their interest in De Gea to pursue Stoke City's Asmir Begovic.
