Aitor Karanka wants Shay Given stay

Aitor Karanka is hoping that goalkeeper Shay Given will extend his loan spell with Middlesbrough.

Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka has revealed that he would like Shay Given to remain with the club beyond the end of his current loan deal.

The goalkeeper is due to return to his parent club Aston Villa on Wednesday, but Karanka has expressed his desire for that deal to be extended.

"Everybody is clear - I want to keep him, he wants to stay and the club is working for Shay to stay here," Karanka told the club's official website.

"We are working hard because everyone knows how important Shay is for us, not just now we are winning games, but he's also important in the changing room. He transmits a lot of experience throughout the defence."

The 37-year-old has made seven appearances between the posts for Boro.
