Report: David Moyes, Rafael Benitez on Newcastle United managerial shortlist

Out-of-work duo Rafael Benitez and David Moyes are the leading contenders to take over from Steve McClaren at Newcastle United, a report claims.

Newcastle United have reportedly lined up Rafael Benitez and David Moyes as potential replacements for Steve McClaren, should the current head boss be given the sack.

McClaren's time at St James' Park appears to be coming to an end, as a run of just six league wins from 28 games since taking charge last summer has left the Magpies in real threat of relegation.

The ex-England manager is expected to learn his fate within the next 48 hours, with club chiefs still deliberating over the best short-term move to take.

According to Sky Sports News, Benitez and Moyes - both of whom are currently out of work following departures from Real Madrid and Real Sociedad respectively earlier this season - are the leading contenders to replace McClaren.

Moyes has previously managed Everton and Manchester United in the Premier League, while Benitez has English top-flight pedigree of his own following spells at Liverpool and Chelsea in the past.
