Newcastle United skipper Fabricio Coloccini is poised to stay at the club after San Lorenzo fail to raise the transfer fee needed to secure the defender, according to a report.

Newcastle United skipper Fabricio Coloccini will reportedly stay at the club next season as San Lorenzo can't afford to sign him this summer.

The defender had been linked with a return to Argentina throughout the second half of last season as he recovered from a back injury.

However, the Argentine club can't raise the £7m fee that the Magpies would demand for the centre-back after a wealthy supporters' group withdrew their funding.

A source told the Daily Star: "The people who can help us don't want to invest in Coloccini. They feel the money could bring in younger players instead."

The 31-year-old made 29 appearances for Alan Pardew's side last season.
