The PFA announce that women footballers will be permitted to join the association from next season.

The Professional Footballers' Association has announced that women's Super League players will be eligible to join the organisation for the first time from next season.

The PFA, which has traditionally only been available for men within the playing profession, have claimed that they will hold an annual PFA Women's Players' Player of the Year Award.

On the official PFA Twitter account, a message read: "We are pleased to announce that #PFA membership will be available for all registered #WSL players from the start of the 2013 season."

PFA chairman Clarke Carlisle told Sky Sports News: "It's fantastic that women players will now be able to join the PFA, long time in coming."

The decision was announced on International Women's Day.
