Preview: Peterborough United vs. Port Vale - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's League One clash between Peterborough United and Port Vale, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Peterborough United will attempt to get their promotion bid back on track when they welcome Port Vale to the Weston Homes Stadium for Tuesday's League One contest.

Meanwhile, managerless Port Vale will be hoping to end their six-game winless run as they look to boost their survival hopes.

Peterborough's hope of achieving promotion have been dented by a four-game winless league run, which began with a goalless draw against Lincoln City last month.

Posh have ultimately failed to collect a point since that result, having lost three consecutive league matches to Wigan Athletic, Exeter City and Wycombe Wanderers.

After conceding three goals before the hour mark in Saturday's away clash with Wycombe, Peterborough showed signs of mounting a fightback when David Ajiboye and Ricky-Jade Jones grabbed a goal apiece.

However, Wycombe added two more goals to their tally to condemn Peterborough to a disappointing 5-2 defeat, leaving them in fifth position and four points adrift of the top two.

With Posh desperate to claim all three points on Tuesday, they can take confidence from the fact that they have won each of their last four meetings with Port Vale.

Port Vale are currently searching for a permanent manager after Andy Crosby was relieved of his duties following a 3-0 defeat to Fleetwood Town earlier this month.

The Valiants subsequently placed Will Ryder in interim charge alongside Matt Done and Danny Lloyd, and the trio have gone on to oversee a defeat to Leyton Orient and a 2-2 draw against Stevenage.

They would have been grateful to salvage a point from Saturday's away meeting with Stevenage after Funso Ojo netted a 98th-minute penalty to ensure that his side took a share of the spoils.

Despite picking up a point at the weekend, the Valiants were unable to escape the drop zone, with goal difference keeping them below 21st-placed Port Vale.

After failing to win any of their last five meetings with Posh (D1, L4), the Valiants will enter Tuesday's encounter with the aim of clinching their first win over Peterborough since September 2016.

Team News

Peterborough are unable to call upon Will Blackmore and Jake Wakeling, while Ephron Mason-Clark is a doubt after missing Saturday's defeat.

Kwame Poku is set to return to the matchday squad, having been forced to miss the last seven matches through injury.

Winger Michael Olakigbe may be brought straight back into the starting lineup after serving a one-match suspension.

Port Vale, meanwhile, are expected to be without Dan Gore, James Plant, Mitch Clark, Ben Garrity and Uche Ikpeazu.

Ryan Loft is also a doubt for the midweek fixture after the forward sat out Saturday's draw with Stevenage due to illness.

Buoyed from scoring a late equaliser at the weekend, Ojo is expected to make his third consecutive start since returning from injury earlier this month.

Peterborough United possible starting lineup:
Bilokapic; Katongo, Knight, Edwards; Burrows; Kyprianou, Collins; Ajiboye, Randall, Olakigbe; Jade-Jones

Port Vale possible starting lineup:
Ripley; Lopata, Smith, Debrah; Massey, Ojo, Lowe, Grant; Chislett, Weir; Wilson

We say: Peterborough United 2-1 Port Vale

After losing their last three matches, Peterborough will view Tuesday's contest as an opportunity to return to winning ways against a struggling Port Vale side, and we think that Posh will ultimately do enough to claim a narrow victory.
