The Scottish Football Association could consider spawning a new league structure to replace the Scottish Premier League and the Scottish Football League.
According to The Express, the Scottish governing body is growing increasingly frustrated at internal disagreements within the SPL, as well as its failure to come up with a more exciting and dynamic format.
There is also said to be concern about the financial future of numerous SFL clubs, with SFA officials keen to offer them more protection.
The newspaper quotes an SFA source as saying: "The SFA may step in and get involved. The extreme may be that they take the thing over. Everyone has to move this along, it's whites of the eyes time."
Last month Celtic became SPL champions for the first time in four years.
