Kevin Phillips admits desire to manage Sunderland

Kevin Phillips admits that he wants to one day become manager of Sunderland, but believes that this summer is too soon.

Former Premier League footballer Kevin Phillips has admitted that he would one day like to become Sunderland manager.

The 41-year-old, who spent six years playing for the Black Cats, is currently working through his coaching badges at Leicester City.

At the end of the season, there is a chance that Sunderland will be looking for a new manager as current boss Dick Advocaat is only on a short-term deal.

Despite Phillips's desire to return to the Stadium of Light in a coaching capacity, the former striker has indicated that it is too soon for him to consider the role.

"At some point in my career, I'd love to come back here and manage, but at the moment, the role I'm in at Leicester is a learning curve for me," The Northern Echo quotes Phillips as saying. "This season has been a massive eye-opener for me.

"At the end of the day, if [the Sunderland job] was put upon me then I'd have no problem doing it, but at the moment I'm enjoying working at Leicester and enjoying learning."

Sunderland need one point from their last two games against Arsenal and Chelsea to keep their Premier League status.
