Adam Johnson targets World Cup place

Adam Johnson admits that he would like to be part of the England squad that will travel to this summer's World Cup in Brazil.

Sunderland winger Adam Johnson has admitted that he is desperate to earn a place in England's World Cup squad this summer.

The 26-year-old, who has not played for the Three Lions since October 2012, has been touted as a potential candidate to travel to Brazil after scoring seven goals in his last eight games.

The former Manchester City man hopes that he can force his way into the plans of England manager Roy Hodgson.

"This is the best period I've had in my career, it sort of came from nowhere," Johnson told The Telegraph.

"I've not spoken to Roy, but I'd love a phone call. I probably wouldn't recognise his number if he rang me because it's been so long.

"If I can't make this one, then I'm never going to make one. Until I see the squad, though, I don't know. If I'm not in this one, I'll plan my holiday."

Johnson has won 11 caps for England.
