Raymond Verheijen resigns as Wales coach ahead of their Gary Speed memorial match against Costa Rica on Wednesday.

Raymond Verheijen has resigned as a coach of the Welsh national football team.

The Dutchman was part of the late Gary Speed's coaching staff.

The 40-year-old should have been part of the managerial setup for Wednesday's memorial match in honour of Speed against Costa Rica.

Manager Chris Coleman and assistants Kit Symons and Osian Roberts will now be without Verheijen for the match at the Cardiff City Stadium.

"Earlier today I have informed the FAW I will resign," he tweeted.

"Have enough of the political and destructive games. Very sad day."

Verheijen previously claimed that team operations manager Adrian Davies had been sacked by the FAW. The Association denied the allegations.

Despite Coleman's appointment, Verheijen was still expected to be part of the coaching staff.

However, his departure has ruled out any such move.
