The home side made an attacking start as Aaron Cresswell played the ball in for Andy Carroll, but the striker's finish was straight into the hands of Ben Foster in the West Brom goal.
The Hammers needed just a few more minutes to open the scoring though as Cresswell was involved again, crossing it in for Diafra Sakho, who met the delivery with a diving header to score his ninth goal since joining the club in the summer.
Stewart Downing could have doubled the advantage for Sam Alladyce's side as he sprinted down the left flank before cutting inside to get his shot away, but Foster was on hand to make the save.
Adrian came under pressure down the other end as the Baggies tried to level the scores, but the keeper reacted quickly to deny Graham Dorrans as he tried to volley in from a Saido Berahino volley on.
The visitors kept pushing for an equaliser before the break though, and managed to level the scores just a few minutes before the interval when Berahino slotted the ball past Adrian from close range, ending his 12-match goal drought.
West Brom continued to look sharp at the start of the second half as Berahino tried to add his second just moments after the restart, but Adrian managed to block his 20-yard drive with a diving stop.
Youssouf Mulumbu came close to putting the visitors ahead moments later after combining with Stephane Sessegnon on the edge of the box, but Alex Song did just enough to force the midfielder to slice his finish into the side netting.
West Ham responded and almost restored their advantage when they were awarded a free kick, but Cresswell's curling effort was kept out by the crossbar.
The Baggies looked the more likely late on as they pushed for a winner inside the final 10 minutes, but a deep cross from Chris Brunt was claimed by Adrian before Sessegnon blasted the ball well wide.
Th result leaves West Ham sixth in the table, while West Brom remain 17th, a point above the relegation zone.
