Andy Farrell: 'Sam Burgess will find it difficult to make World Cup'

England backs coach Andy Farrell believes that Sam Burgess faces a fight to be included in next year's World Cup squad.

England backs coach Andy Farrell has claimed that Sam Burgess faces a difficult fight to make the squad for the 2015 World Cup.

Burgess will switch codes to join Bath in October and Farrell believes that the 25-year-old must quickly prove his quality to head coach Stuart Lancaster to be considered for a spot in next year's tournament.

"The timeline for Sam in terms of making next year's World Cup squad means it will be difficult for him but the move is not just about the here and now. It's about a three-year plan," Farrell told members of the press.

"There is no doubt Sam will be aiming to come in with all guns blazing but he still has to make the step up. He has to earn the right to get into the England squad by playing for his club . We have made this squad a difficult place to break into."

Burgess is currently playing for the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the National Rugby League.
